A letter of credit (LC), also known as a documentary credit or bankers commercial credit, or letter of undertaking (LoU), is a payment mechanism used in international trade to provide an economic guarantee from a creditworthy bank to an exporter of goods.

The Standby Letter of Credit (Standby LC) is, like the guarantee, commonly used to cover the risk of a contract party not fulfilling agreed obligations, for instance failure to pay or deliver. Standby LCs can be used in open account trade as well as a complement to collections and documentary credits (DCs). ( MA has prime bank SBLC without collaterals which are rare in the arena ).

Under a bank guarantee, if the buyer is unable to make the payment to the seller or creditor, then the bank pays the fixed amount to the seller as the obligations of the contract are not met. On the other hand, under a letter of credit, the bank makes the payment to the seller once he or she delivers. (MA has a prime bank BG without collateral which is rare in the arena).
